Breast Implant Popularity by Region

Cosmetic surgery is unlike any other type of surgery in that it is initiated not by the physician but by the patient. Motives for seeking plastic surgery vary widely among patients; some seek a change in their appearance due to external pressures, such as the desire to please others, while others are reacting to more internal pressures, such as a long-standing personal dissatisfaction with a body part. Since the American Society for Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) began studying trends in plastic surgery in 1992, breast augmentation has been one of the top surgical procedures, usually competing with liposuction, nose reshaping, and eyelid surgery for the top spot. While the popularity of breast augmentation continues to increase in general, those in certain geographical regions are choosing to have it done in greater proportion to those in other regions.
According to statistics compiled in 2006 by the ASPS, breast augmentation is the most popular in the Mountain region (Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming) and Pacific region (Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington), with 36 percent of cosmetic surgery patients in those states undergoing breast augmentation. The second most popular region for breast augmentation, with 19 percent of patients undergoing the procedure, is the South Atlantic region ( Delaware, Washington, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Puerto Rico). Breast augmentation in the South Central, North Central, and New England/Middle Atlantic regions accounts for 17 percent, 15 percent, and 13 percent of cosmetic surgery procedures, respectively.
Why do patients in certain regions opt for breast implants while patients in others are content to wear padded bras? It can be suggested that preoccupation with appearance varies from region to region. Notice, for example, that breast augmentation is most popular in regions where it is warm and sunny for a large part of the year. Hot weather leads to people exposing their bodies. And people exposing their bodies leads to people wanting to look hot. According to this equation, hot weather equals hot bodies.
In addition, the regions where breast augmentation is especially prevalent are home to some of television’s most popular cosmetic surgery-themed TV shows. Both Extreme Makeover and Dr. 90210 are filmed in the Pacific region, the numero uno region for breast augmentation. Set in Hollywood, Extreme Makeover blazed the trail for many other reality shows in the same genre, while Dr. 90210, which focuses on cosmetic surgeons and patients, is set in the wealthy suburb of Beverly Hills. Situated on the opposite coast in Miami is the popular TV drama Nip/Tuck. If the abundance of television shows that rely on plastic surgery subject matter is any indication, California and Florida are as image conscious as the beaches are full.
So could where you live influence whether you decide to go under the knife? Or do people who are predisposed to opt for surgery flock to certain regions?
