Best Celebrity Smile Makeovers – The Stars Go from Gapped to Capped

Though they may seem impervious to body woes and bad hair days, celebrities are not immune to pointy fangs, a noticeable gap in their smiles, or yellowed teeth. As their fame grows and their faces become plastered on the tabloids, some stars have wound up in the cosmetic dentist’s chair for a comprehensive smile makeover. With the exception of some veneers resembling Chiclets – cough, cough, Gary Busey – most celebrity dental makeovers have proven successful, leaving these celebs with a genuine “movie star smile.” Here is DocShop’s list of the best celebrity smile makeovers.

Elliott Yamin

Smile Makeover Method: Veneers

During Elliott Yamin’s run on American Idol, it was often unclear if judge Simon Cowell was referring to Elliott’s crooked teeth or vocal performances when he used phrases like “simply atrocious” and “absolutely dreadful.” Since his voice, in my opinion, was usually “a molten hot lava bomb” – in the eloquent words of fellow AI judge Randy Jackson – I hedged my bets that Simon was talking about Elliott’s cave of a mouth. However, shortly after his run on the show, Elliott had $50,000 of veneers placed to cover up his snaggleteeth. One of his 2007 hit singles was aptly named “Wait for You” – Elliott dear, we were waiting a long time for you to fix your smile! Now he finally has some “blazing hot” teeth to match that voice (and I have shamelessly recycled every tired Idol catchphrase ever uttered on the show).

Miley Cyrus

Smile Makeover Method: Veneers

Miley's wholesomeness (pre-Vanity Fair photos, at least) and enormous stage presence are appealing to kids and parents alike. Children idolize her, and parents hoping to shield their children from the Paris Hiltons of the world respect her. Miley made a smart move in recently having beautiful veneers placed on her teeth, considering that, once upon a time, “Hannah Wyoming” would have been a more apt name for this teen queen (since she had the Grand Tetons jutting from her gum line).

Keith Urban

Smile Makeover Method: Veneers

Many days have gone by since Keith Urban made a smart dental decision back in the 90s. His teeth used to be so frightening that his smile could have scared pregnant wife Nicole Kidman into early labor. But before Keith exploded onto the country scene with sold-out tours and multi-platinum records, he had the good sense to hop on the veneer train. The result? Straight, white teeth with a small signature gap in front so that his smile still looks natural.

Gwen Stefani

Smile Makeover Method: Traditional Braces

I admit a fierce devotion to Gwen Stefani’s trendsetting fashion sense; after she sported white tank tops during No Doubt concerts, I bummed a ride to Wal-Mart® for a pack of men’s Hanes® undershirts. Then, her Harajuku tour inspired me to purchase a pair of platform sandals with ballerina ribbons to wrap around my legs. And on the day she debuted her L.A.M.B. clothing line, I ran to Nordstrom to stare wistfully at the garments’ price tags and then headed to Forever 21 for the knock-off versions. However, one trend that I’d like to take credit for is those metal braces she so proudly displayed – Gwen, I had them first! Since the braces, Gwen’s smile has maintained the sparkle and shine of a true star.

Prince Harry

Smile Makeover Method: Traditional Braces

Comparing Prince William to Prince Harry is like comparing vanilla to strawberry. And personally, I’ve always craved a big strawberry sundae. My prince of choice took a bold step years ago by bucking up and soldiering through the “brace face” jeers in favor of a dental makeover and some straight teeth. I can only hope his brave actions can inspire the rest of his country to follow suit (Miss Winehouse, we’re talking to you!).

Katherine Heigl

Smile Makeover Method: Invisalign®

Katherine Heigl has admitted she wore Invisalign® clear braces in the months before her wedding to correct several crooked teeth. Although she baffled some cosmetic dentists by referring to the aligners as “Netflix for your teeth,” I think her straightened smile looks so good that I’m adding all of her movies to my queue.

I had no idea Katherin Heigl wore Invisalign! That gives me hope that I can try to correct my teeth and not draw attention to them in the process. Thanks for the information!

Kudos to the author of this article. It was funny, as well as, full of pearls of wisdom. I think some of those "Worst" choppers should take note of the "Best" choppers and drop some "change on their Grilz.

In truth, Simon never used such derogatory terms when giving feedback to Elliott -- he loved his voice and never commented on his appearance. He did suggest he relax and show more personality, but that's all. Elliott had his dental work done in late 2006, by the way, so it really wasn't that much of a "wait" once the tour ended.

Yeah, congratulations, dentists, convincing these people to get this expensive work done and guaranteeing that you will have customers for life as the porcelain chips and breaks. Also, you effed up the teeth by filing them down. Can we see root canals and caps in these stars futures and then implants? Shame on you all.
