BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment

Most practitioners prefer to use BOTOX® injections for wrinkles caused by hyperactive muscles. BOTOX® Cosmetic can reduce the appearance of crow's feet, the vertical lines between the eyebrows, and the horizontal lines on the forehead. Experienced practitioners can also inject the product under the eyes.

Patients that do not notice the results of the procedure within a few days may have been under-corrected, have unrealistic expectations, or received injections of BOTOX® Cosmetic products that were not stored or handled properly. There are also rare, but documented, cases of BOTOX® Cosmetic resistance.

If the BOTOX® Cosmetic was stored properly, freshly opened, and mixed properly, you may need additional units to obtain optimal results. However, physicians should avoid injecting too many units to avoid overcorrection and other possible side effects.

If a photo was taken prior to treatment, you and your doctor can view the photo to see if any improvement occurred. Patients that notice some improvement may need to repeat treatment after a few months as the muscle is generally easier to treat after a couple of treatments.

BOTOX® Cosmetic Alternatives

The most popular botulinum toxin alternative to BOTOX® Cosmetic is Dysport®. Botolulinum toxins work by stopping nerve transmission signals to the muscles. Dysport®is considered a lower cost alternative to BOTOX® Cosmetic, but it is harder to apply and many practitioners prefer BOTOX® injections for a more natural and complete treatment.

For longer lasting alternatives, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) and brow lift (forehead) surgery can reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
