Tom Cruise Wears Braces
Tom Cruise is arguably the most famous actor in Hollywood. After starring in Top Gun in 1986, Cruise quickly became a heartthrob. He went on to build his career in action films, starring in movies like Risky Business, Vanilla Sky, War of the Worlds, and the Mission Impossible trilogy. Although he has enjoyed a successful movie career, these days he is perhaps more well-known for his couch jumping incident on The Oprah Show in which he professed his love for the much younger Katie Holmes. He has most recently been in the headlines for his relationship with Holmes, and his parenting skills with his youngest daughter, Suri.
In addition to being known for his high-profile roles, Cruise is often considered one of the most attractive men in Hollywood. Not only was he ranked as the world's most powerful celebrity by Forbes magazine in 2006, but he was also named one of People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" on three separate occasions. But despite Cruise's position now, the truth is that his looks weren't always dreamy. Growing up, Cruise had noticeable dental problems which he was admittedly insecure about. Over the years, he has reportedly received several cosmetic dentistry treatments, including braces, in order to make his smile match the rest of his Hollywood persona.
Tom Cruise's Smile
While Cruise is often regarded as one of the most attractive men in Hollywood, one criticism that many viewers had was the look of his teeth. Pictures of Cruise as a teenager reveal that his teeth were in fact crooked and misaligned. In addition, one of Cruise's front teeth was especially prominent. This caused him to feel so insecure that during the beginning of his film career, he avoided being photographed at all costs. In fact, in Patrick Swayze's memoir, he states that when he worked with Cruise in The Outsiders, Cruise refused to sit for photo shoots. Many people have commented on Cruise's smile, even in his adult life, noting that it is particularly uneven. While it is not immediately noticeable, a more concentrated look at photos of his smile shows that his teeth are shifted to the left. This misalignment makes it look like Cruise has only one "front" tooth as opposed to two. There has been much media speculation as to the cause of this, including unfounded reports that Cruise suffers from a birth defect. Although he admitted to having braces in 2002, he has never publicly commented on the appearance of his teeth.
Many people have speculated that Tom Cruise received porcelain veneers during the beginning of his film career. After staring in Top Gun, Cruise emerged with a brighter, more attractive smile. These veneers helped Cruise feel more comfortable while flashing his pearly whites to the paparazzi. In fact, without his new set of teeth, who knows if he would have ranked on any "most attractive" lists.
Despite gaining international fame, Cruise wasn't yet completely comfortable with his smile. In 2002, he received braces to enhance the look of his teeth. Rather than go with traditional metal braces, he received ceramic brackets. These are clear, and less noticeable than other orthodontic treatments. In addition, they tend to be more comfortable than metal braces. The only portion that is visible is a single metal band, which Cruise proudly sported on the red carpets. In Hollywood fashion, however, Cruise had the braces removed while filming his movies. In total, Cruise wore the braces for about two years.
