August 17, 2009

Scaring Alopecia is also called “cicatricial alopecia”. Cicatricial alopecia is a rare hair disorder that destroys the hair follicle and replaces the follicle with a scar tissue causing permanent Hair loss.  There are two types of this hair disorder.

·         Primary Scarring  alopecia

·          Secondary Scarring alopecia.

Primary cicatricial alopecia involves destruction of the hair follicle and their opening from which the hair fibers emerge. The alopecia does not affect other tissues and organs on the body it’s primarily focused on the hair follicles.   Primary cicatricial alopecia is categorized into three various types. Lymphocytic,  neutrophilic and mixed alopecia. The exact diagnosis of the different types of primary scarring alopecia is necessary because the treatment for each one is different.

Secondary alopecias are more generalized as a disease. It occurs in various organs of the body and damages several tissues, organs, and scarring alopecia. The causes of secondary scarring alopecia include radiation, drugs, surgeries, tumors, etc.

The early stages of diagnosing scarring alopecia are a lot of inflammatory cells found around the hair follicles. It is generally believed that the obliteration of the hair and the scar tissue development is induced by these inflammatory cells. The effect s of scarring alopecia leads to the formation of bald patches in the end stages of it the bald patches will stop expanding and any inflammation, burning or pain in the hair follicles goes away. This rare hair disorder can affect both men and women, most commonly young adults may be affected.
