August 21, 2009

Alopecia areata is a condition in which the body attacks its own hair cells, which unfortunately cause hair loss. The hair loss can be so severe you may lose all your hair including facial hair, such as eyelashes, beard, and eyebrows. It could also be as little as a bald spot. Alopecia areata is considered an autoimmune disorder. This is when the body attacks its own cells; alopecia is an example of this disorder. There is rarely a treatment for autoimmune disorders, but fortunately those affected by alopecia areata sometimes experience re-growth of their hair. The condition isn’t contagious; you cannot get it from being in contact with it. It runs in families, making it a genetic disorder. It can be treated 50% of people affected by it will re-grow hair without any treatment. If your hair is loss last longer than a year treatment should be considered. There are different types of treatments - steroid injections, creams and shampoos. Each of which can be used in different combinations.
