Can Gum Disease lead to heart problems?
Can gum disease lead to heart problems?
Recent research has shown a connection between gum infection and heart disease. Bacteria from the gums can enter the bloodstream causing inflammation of the blood vessel lining and buildup of plaque in vessel walls. This inflammation can loosen unstable plaque that can obstruct vessels and cause a heart attack. According to a State University of New York at Buffalo study, those with gum infections have triple the risk of heart attack than those who do not. This is only another reason to make sure your gums are in excellent health!
