CoolLipo™ is an advanced form of laser liposuction that allows surgeons to remove pockets of fat from specific areas of the body while also tightening surrounding skin. The laser and wavelength technology breaks up and thins out fat so it can be easily removed from the body; the liposuction treatment also targets water and contracts collagen to keep your skin firm.
Who Are the Best Candidates?
The CoolLipo™ system makes it easier for plastic surgeons to treat areas affected by skin laxity and those that are hard to reach with traditional liposuction. CoolLipo™ can treat:
- Excess fat in the chin, neck, and jowls
- Areas with extra skin, including the arms, abdomen, and neck
- Small pockets of fat
The CoolLipo™ treatment is best suited for patients with smaller areas of localized fat. CoolLipo™ patients should also be in good health, near their ideal body weight, and not smoke.
The CoolLipo™ procedure generally costs between $3,500 and $8,000. The cost varies based on the area of the body that is being treated. Areas such as the neck, jowls, and chin are usually less expensive than larger treatment areas such as the abdomen.
The CoolLipo™ Procedure
The CoolLipo™ treatment is generally performed under local anesthesia, and the entire procedure typically takes less than one hour to complete. Small incisions are made in the area to be treated, and then the CoolLipo™ cannula, which resembles a needle and syringe, is positioned. The tip of the cannula emits short pulses of laser energy, high peak power, and 1320 nm wavelength to liquefy fat, tighten the skin, and reduce trauma to surrounding tissue; the surgeon inserts the cannula through the incisions and gently moves it around the treatment area to remove excess fat.
Most patients return to work, school, and other activities a few days to a week after treatment. During recovery, patients should rest, take pain medication as directed, and consume meals that are low in sodium. Patients should wear a compression garment for a few days following surgery to protect the treatment area and promote healing. Exercise and other strenuous activity should be avoided for at least a couple of weeks after surgery.
CoolLipo™ Side Effects
In the majority of cases, patients experience mild bruising, swelling, pain, and other side effects. These side effects can be eased with the use of ice and pain medication. Most of the side effects dissipate within a couple weeks, though all swelling could take up to three months to go down.
More serious risks associated with CoolLipo™ include allergic reaction to anesthesia, infection, and bleeding. If you experience any of these complications, consult your surgeon as soon as possible.
The fat sculpting and skin tightening results of CoolLipo™ treatment are visible immediately after treatment. However, the best results may not be seen until a few months after the procedure once all the swelling has gone down.
