Featured ToolsLiposuction FAQs
Liposuction is now easier and safer than ever before, and, as a result, its popularity has soared. Navigating the new liposuction options can be a challenge, however. For information about liposuction procedures, please refer to this list of frequently asked questions and then speak with an experienced liposuction surgeon about your specific case.
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure designed to remove pockets of fat in order to contour specific areas of the body. It is frequently performed to reduce fat in the hips, thighs, abdomen, upper arms, and other areas. In a typical liposuction procedure, up to 10 pounds of fat is removed using suction and a small tube called a cannula. A small incision will be made near the area to be treated to allow the cannula to fit through the skin. Using suction, the surgeon will remove unwanted fat cells. The incision will then be closed, and the patient can enjoy their improved body shape.
What are the different liposuction techniques?
The four most commonly used liposuction techniques today are tumescent liposuction, ultrasound assisted liposuction, LipoSelection®, and power assisted liposuction. Tumescent liposuction utilizes a large amount of saline fluid to loosen fatty tissue from muscle for easier fat removal. Ultrasound assisted liposuction, also known as ultrasonic liposuction or UAL, uses ultrasonic energy to break up fat prior to removal. LipoSelection® is a type of ultrasound assisted liposuction in which grooved probes and a specialized cannula are used. Power assisted liposuction is a type of tumescent liposuction which involves a vibrating cannula. This powered cannula breaks up fat quickly for easier suction.
What is tumescent liposuction?
Tumescent liposuction involves the injection of large amounts of fluid into the area to be treated. It allows for easier removal of the fat and reduces blood loss. Super-wet liposuction is similar to tumescent liposuction, but with less fluid injected into the treatment area. The saline fluid separates fat from muscle, making it easier for the liposuction surgeon to remove fat. This procedure takes longer than basic liposuction, also known as suction assisted liposuction, because the saline fluid must percolate before fat removal can begin.
What is ultrasonic assisted liposuction (UAL)?
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) involves the use of a special cannula which emits ultrasonic energy. The energy breaks up the fat and liquefies it, making removal easier. Fat is then suctioned out using traditional liposuction techniques. Ultrasonic assisted liposuction is particularly useful in treating areas like the upper back and male breast, where fiber makes fat dense and difficult to remove.
What is LipoSelection®?
LipoSelection® is an advanced form of ultrasonic liposuction which uses proprietary grooved probes and a specialized cannula to remove fat. With LipoSelection®, fat is emulsified prior to removal so that it is easier for the doctor to remove. Pain and side effects are reduced with this procedure because the fat in the treatment area becomes less resistant to suction after ultrasonic energy has been applied. Swelling and bruising will subside more quickly and recovery time will be shorter overall.
What is power assisted liposuction (PAL)?
Power assisted liposuction (PAL) uses a powered cannula which produces tiny, rapid vibrations to break up fat cells. Although the name might imply a rough procedure, power assisted liposuction is actually gentler than traditional liposuction because it allows the physician to remove fat with more controlled and precise motions. This type of liposuction causes less discomfort for the patient, can be performed more quickly, and frequently results in the removal of more fat than would be possible with other forms of liposuction.
Am I a good candidate for liposuction?
You are a good candidate for liposuction if you are at or near your normal weight. People with localized areas of fat see the most dramatic results. Patients with firm, elastic skin will find that the skin fits easier to their reduced contour. There is no age limit for liposuction; however, anyone with a medical condition such as diabetes or poor blood circulation is not an ideal candidate for liposuction. Consult with a liposuction doctor to learn more about the features of good or bad liposuction candidates.
What are the most commonly treated areas?
The most commonly treated areas in women are the outer thighs and stomach. The most commonly treated areas in men are the flanks, or "love handles." Other popular areas for liposuction treatment include the neck, face, hips, upper arms, upper and lower abdomen, lower back, sides of the knees, and lower legs. Because of its versatility, liposuction is a very popular procedure and is often combined with other forms of plastic surgery for more dramatic results. Doctors can use facial liposuction and liposuction of the body to remove excess fat from almost any area a patient is unhappy with.
What risks are associated with liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure - as a result, it carries the same risks as any other surgery. Infection, bleeding, and nerve damage are the most common risk factors. Liposuction also results in fluid loss. It is important that you are carefully monitored to prevent excessive fluid loss. If left untreated, fluid loss may lead to shock. In addition, blood clots, fat clots, friction burns, or harmful drug reactions can occur. What are the common side effects of liposuction?
Swelling, bruising, and scarring are common post- liposuction side effects. Swelling may last for several months, but will not interfere with your everyday life. Bruising may be more painful, but bruises will have healed after approximately one month. The scar that will result from liposuction surgery is typically only a quarter of an inch long and will begin to fade only a few weeks after the operation. Most of the side effects of liposuction are so minor that, within a week of surgery, most patients are able to go back to work and resume their day-to-day activities.
What are the benefits of liposuction?
Liposuction can eliminate small deposits of fat from stubborn areas unresponsive to diet and exercise. It provides a way to override genetics and take control of the shape of your body. Although only small amounts of fat can be removed through liposuction, the recontouring effects of the procedure are often so dramatic that it looks as though more weight has been lost. Liposuction benefits are often more than aesthetic. Many patients are able to partake in activities they had previously avoided because of their appearance, and most report an increase in their confidence.
Will liposuction get rid of cellulite?
Liposuction for cellulite removal is not completely effective, though it can diminish the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite is caused by many factors, many of which liposuction cannot change: age, genetics, gender, and the thickness of your skin. Liposuction can minimize the appearance of cellulite through fat removal, but cannot be expected to eliminate cellulite entirely.
Will the fat come back after liposuction?
Liposuction removes the fat cells from specific areas of the body. These fat cells will not return; however, if the patient does not follow a healthy diet and exercise routine, the remaining fat cells could expand and lead to weight gain across all areas of the body. However, the areas that were contoured with liposuction will have a reduced capacity for fat production. With a post- liposuction exercise and diet regimen, patients can maintain their slimmer figures.
When should I expect to see positive results following the liposuction procedure?
You will most likely notice some improvement after your liposuction surgery, but it will take four to six weeks for most of the swelling to subside. Optimal liposuction results should be visible in three to six months. Liposuction should not be used for weight loss, but to reshape areas of the body through the removal of fat deposits.
When can I go back to work?
Your return to work depends on how many areas of the body you had treated with liposuction. Some people may be able to return to work immediately, but most people take an average of four to seven days off before returning to their jobs. You will experience bruising and swelling during your post- liposuction recovery time, but most patients are able to move comfortably enough to go shopping, go to work, and go about their daily lives.
How do I find an experienced liposuction surgeon?
Many surgeons perform liposuction, but it is important to find one that has the experience and dedication necessary to provide quality results and follow-up care. Find a liposuction doctor in your area who has the expertise necessary to help you achieve the best possible results.
