Featured ToolsEthnic Rhinoplasty
Though they are not necessarily shared by all within the group, people of some ethnicities tend to have characteristic nasal forms that differ from those common amongst Caucasian people. These differences change the standard strategies for ethnic rhinoplasty surgery somewhat. Still, patients of African, East Asian, and Hispanic ethnicity can receive the rhinoplasty results they desire without diminishing the appearance of their ethnic heritage.
Candidates for Ethnic Rhinoplasty Surgery
Anyone who seeks a new shape for the nose and who has nasal features typical of their ethnic group is a candidate for ethnic rhinoplasty surgery. For instance, many people of Asian and African descent have noses with wider bases and less sharply defined tips. These people, as well as many Hispanics, also have thicker skin on the tip of the nose, giving it a rounded, bulbous appearance. Ethnic rhinoplasty surgery seeks to help those who have and dislike these and other features, including the wide, flat bridge and the “hump” in the ridge of the nose that are common in some. Ethnic female rhinoplasty, which is designed to give an overly prominent nose a more refined and feminine appearance, is a good option for many ethnic women.
Surgical Techniques
Like other types of rhinoplasty surgery, ethnic rhinoplasty seeks to reshape the nose by altering the structure of the bone and cartilage beneath without undue external scarring. Some techniques are more commonly used for ethnic patients, though. The flatter noses possessed by many non-Caucasian individuals can be addressed by grafting in extra cartilage from elsewhere in the body and shaping the skin of the nose tip more finely. Up to three incisions (at the base of skin outside each nostril and in the columella between them) may be used to narrow the base of a wider nose. Artificial implants may be inserted into the bridge of the nose to give it better definition as well. Small amounts of bone can be removed to eliminate humps. If you have a nose with typically ethnic features and would like to change its shape, talk to your doctor about which of these ethnic rhinoplasty surgery techniques would be right for you.
Ethnic Rhinoplasty Results
The results of ethnic rhinoplasty surgery are generally just as good as those of Caucasian nose jobs. Using the techniques discussed above, surgeons can alter the nose to make it appear straighter, longer, narrower, or however else the patient desires, within limits. Ethnic female rhinoplasty can make a nose with ethnic features seem more classically feminine. Whatever the patient’s race or gender, the goal is usually the same: change the nose to give the face a better sense of balance, symmetry, straightness. Ethnic rhinoplasty surgery techniques allow skilled cosmetic surgeons to do that for all of their patients.
