Featured ToolsChoosing a Rhinoplasty Surgeon
When selecting a rhinoplasty cosmetic surgeon, serious care should be given to finding out as much as possible about the doctor. It is of course important to select a surgeon who is experienced in performing plastic surgery of the nose, and who has a reputation for achieving patient satisfaction and success. If there were to be a complication during nose surgery, an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon would be better able to assess and correct the situation. Also, an experienced cosmetic surgeon will have performed a great number of rhinoplasty procedures and therefore has honed his or her talents and techniques. Rhinoplasty may cost more — or less — than you are expecting, but price should not be the only factor when you select a rhinoplasty surgeon.
What to Look for in a Rhinoplasty Surgeon
There are many different things to consider when choosing a surgeon to perform your rhinoplasty procedure, and only by taking all of these factors into consideration can you get an accurate idea of a surgeon's level of skill and experience.
Board Certification and Training
One of the most important qualifications of a rhinoplasty surgeon is his or her training and education. You should look for surgeons who have been trained at institutions with particularly rigorous curriculums, or professionals who completed their residencies at excellent facilities or trained under notable surgeons.
Most prospective plastic surgery candidates do not have extensive knowledge of the qualifications they should be looking for in a surgeon. One way to differentiate cosmetic surgeons is to look for those with board certification. The American Board of Medical Specialties offer certification to those physicians who meet certain minimum requirements for inclusion. For board certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery, physicians not only complete their medical training at a reputable educational institution and a specialized five-year residency in an area related to plastic surgery, but must also pass a rigorous set of examinations.
General or Facial Plastic Surgeon?
Choosing between a general plastic surgeon and a surgeon who specializes in plastic surgery of the face can be difficult. It is certainly very important to choose a surgeon who has a great deal of experience performing rhinoplasty procedures, regardless of his or her specialization. It is just as crucial to investigate the surgeon’s education, experience, and past work. When you’re thinking of rhinoplasty, choosing a cosmetic surgeon who specializes in facial techniques may be preferable, but only if he or she is skilled in nose surgeries. In short, just find a surgeon whose rhinoplasty work you are comfortable with.
Testimonials and Photos
It is a very good idea to request photographic evidence of a surgeon’s past rhinoplasty results before selecting a surgeon. Testimonials may be helpful as well, as they allow you to find out what other patients have said about the surgeon. Many physicians with their own Web sites will have these posted online. If not, ask to see some photos of the cosmetic surgeon's work during your consultation. Don't feel embarrassed! It's the surgeon’s responsibility to make sure you are completely comfortable, and if there is hesitation to show you past results or allow you to hear what previous patients have said — either by reading testimonials or speaking to past patients — then there may be reason for you to worry.
