Caring for Dental Implants

Caring for dental implants is not much different from caring for regular teeth. Implant dentistry patients should:

  • Brush at least twice a day around the prosthetic teeth, gums, and abutments.
  • Floss frequently to prevent plaque from building up, which can lead to gum tissue inflammation and tooth decay.
  • Visit the dentist regularly for check-ups, professional cleanings, and preventive care.
  • Avoid certain foods, including extremely sticky or sugary foods.
  • Avoid teeth grinding or clenching, or any other movement that may put too much pressure on the implant.
  • Follow the instructions of their dental implant specialist.

Special Instructions

Depending on the type of dental implant placed, patients may be given specific instructions and a special cleaning regimen. If the patient has removable dentures, the implant dentist may recommend a specific toothbrush or rinse. The dentist will also demonstrate how to thoroughly cleanse the part of the denture that clasps or clips onto the implants.

Restoration Replacement

Although implants can last for many years, a restoration can wear over time. Should a restoration crack or break, the dentist can replace it. The replacement process is neither invasive nor painful.
