Alternatives to Dental Implants

One of the most notable advantages to having dental implants placed is that they can prevent bone loss that may otherwise occur when a tooth is missing. However, dental implants are not for everyone. People looking to avoid dental implants can consider the following tooth replacement options.

Full Dentures

Dentures are a removable restorative dentistry option for people who have lost nearly all of their natural teeth. Dentures are composed of artificial teeth attached to a support piece. Traditional dentures are made of a plastic material; however ceramic porcelain dentures are now widely available. Dentures can be removed so they may be cleaned, and they may also be taken out before going to bed.

Partial Dentures

For people who have lost several, but not all, of their natural teeth, removable partial dentures are a good option. These dentures are composed of a plastic base to which the artificial teeth are attached and metal clasps that are affixed to the surrounding natural teeth. An advantage to partial dentures is that if a natural tooth falls out or decays, a new artificial tooth can be added to the denture base.

Bridges

Bridges are artificial teeth that are supported by crowns that are attached to the natural teeth on either side of a gap. They are made of strong and durable porcelain, and are crafted to complement the size, shape, and color of surrounding natural teeth. Because bridges are custom made for each patient, they will fit securely and comfortably in the mouth.  Bridges prevent natural teeth from shifting out of proper alignment, which can occur when there’s a gap between teeth.

“Teeth in a Day”

Traditional dental implant surgery and the period of osseointegration that follows (the time during which the gums heal around the posts) generally require five months to two years. However, a new procedure enables patients to literally have “Teeth in a Day." This innovative procedure allows patients to restore full function to the mouth immediately with a dramatically shorter recovery period. The dentist will start by prepping the area for the dental implant, removing a damaged tooth if necessary, and will then proceed to place the dental implant, and crown it with the implant restoration. The patient will walk out of the office with their new teeth within a few hours.
