Cosmelan® Depigmentation Treatment

updated

Certain factors, such as sun damage and the use of birth control pills, can produce noticeable dark brown patches and spots on the cheeks, forehead, and temples. Makeup often fails to conceal these areas, and many creams on the market prove ineffective. Cosmelan® Depigmentation is an excellent treatment for reducing the appearance of patches and spots on the face. Cosmelan® works quickly and effectively to even out the complexion and eliminate noticeable hyper-pigmentation.

Causes of Hyper-pigmentation

The most common cause of hyper-pigmentation is exposure to the sun or extreme heat. Other causes include hormonal changes (during pregnancy or with the use of birth control pills), cystic acne, and aging. When hormones fluctuate, or the skin is repeatedly exposed to the sun, cells produce excess pigment, which leads to the appearance of dark patches and spots. If acne seems to be the main cause of hyper-pigmentation, you may want to consider a chemical peel.

How Cosmelan® Works

Cosmelan® works by slowing the production of melanin, which causes dark, blotchy spots to appear on the skin. The ingredients in Cosmelan® inhibit the melanin-forming enzyme tyrosinase. Once this enzyme is blocked, the cells produce less melanin, and fewer dark spots rise to the surface of the skin.

The Cosmelan® Depigmentation Treatment Process

The Cosmelan® Depigmentation treatment process consists of two phases: an in-office session with a physician or medical professional, followed by at-home maintenance. During the first phase, the patient's face is cleansed with a purifying solution to eliminate oil and facilitate penetration of the Cosmelan® cream into the skin. Then the skin is covered with a thick layer of the Cosmelan® mask, which is left on for several hours, depending on skin type. At home, the patient applies several Cosmelan® creams, including a sun block, over a period of three weeks. The patient should begin to see results during this phase.

Results after the Treatment

In most cases, patients begin to see significant improvement in their skin within a week of their initial treatment. They may initially experience slight reddening, tightening, and flaking of the skin, but once the new layer of skin emerges, the dark patches disappear, and the complexion looks even and smooth.

Cosmelan® Depigmentation Cost

The cost of the Cosmelan® Depigmentation treatment runs anywhere from $500 to $1,000. The cost varies based on the skill of the dermatologist that applies the product, and the geographical location of the practice. When compared to other facial dermatology treatments, Cosmelan® Depigmentation is relatively inexpensive. However, many patients do not like wearing the Cosmelan® Depigmentation creams on the skin for long periods of time; these patients may prefer a shorter, in-office facial treatment.
