Preparing for BOTOX® Treatment
Patients experience the most satisfaction from a cosmetic procedure, such as a BOTOX® treatment, when they have a good idea of what to expect. Although the routine may vary slightly from doctor to doctor, the typical process is outlined below. The following information about the day of your appointment and the preparation for the procedure will help you be fully prepared for your BOTOX® treatment.
The Day of Your Appointment
When you arrive at your doctor’s office for your BOTOX® treatment, you will first be asked to fill out patient information and other forms. Then you will meet with your doctor or a trained staff member to discuss your expectations for the procedure. At this time, it is important to be honest about any allergies or other conditions that may not make you a good candidate for BOTOX® treatment.
At some cosmetic practices, you can have your consultation and be treated in one visit, depending on the availability of appointments. Your doctor, a registered nurse, or a medical assistant will perform the BOTOX® treatment. If a staff member treats you, he or she should be trained and closely supervised by a physician, and have extensive experience administering BOTOX® injections. Tips for choosing a BOTOX® doctor.
How Will the Doctor Prepare Me for BOTOX® Treatment?
Before your BOTOX® treatment, you will be seated in a reclining chair, similar to the chair used in a dentist’s office. Your doctor (or a trained staff member) will decide where to administer the BOTOX® injections by asking you to contract certain facial muscles. Based on your desired results and your ability to move these facial muscles, your doctor will mark the locations to be treated. Though no anesthesia is required, your doctor may choose to numb the targeted areas with a cold compress or cream. Any discomfort from the injections is usually minimal and lasts only a short time. The actual BOTOX® treatment typically takes about 10 minutes. After the BOTOX® treatment is complete, you can return to your daily activities almost immediately. More on BOTOX® after care.
