Zyderm® and Zyplast®
Two of the most widely recognized and well established injectable collagen implants, Zyplast® and Zyderm® can give you full lips and a smoother, younger looking face. Derived from bovine tissue, they were the first collagen implants to be approved by the FDA in 1983. Since then, millions of people have turned to Zyplast® and Zyderm® to help them enhance their features.
What are Zyderm® and Zyplast®?
Zyplast® and Zyderm® have been used in over one million patients and were the first collagen implants to be approved by the FDA. They are made of purified bovine-derived collagen and are used to improve facial contour and reduce the appearance of both fine lines and deeper wrinkles. If you have crow’s feet or fine lines around the lips, Zyderm® can subtly smooth the target area for a fresher, more youthful appearance. Zyplast® is used to treat deeper folds such as brow wrinkles or frown lines, and provides subtle volume and contouring to enhance your face.
The bovine-derived collagen that Zyderm® and Zyplast® utilize is obtained from steers in a closed herd, meaning that they are closely monitored for diseases and have no contact with other herds. This decreases the chance that disease will spread from animal to human. However, about 3 percent of people are allergic to animal-derived bovine and are not eligible to receive Zyderm® and Zyplast® collagen implants. This will be determined during a spot test performed on the forearm four weeks prior to your scheduled appointment to get the implants. Allergic reactions that take place after the procedure are usually the result of the patient not watching the spot test closely enough to determine if he or she has an allergic reaction to the bovine.
What Areas Can be Treated with Zyderm®/Zyplast®?
Zyderm® and Zyplast® can be used on most areas of the face. Zyderm® is ideal for filling in unsightly fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth and eyes. Zyplast® is used to make lips thick and luscious, as well as contour deeper folds and wrinkles around the nose and forehead. When used together, Zyderm® and Zyplast® give a flawless, youthful appearance to skin that has been affected by age and time. Zyplast® can also fill acne scars to even out skin and give the face a smoother and more desirable appearance.
Zyderm® and Zyplast® remain a quick and relatively inexpensive way to return collagen to skin, making it appear younger in a matter of minutes. With built-in numbing agents, Zyderm® and Zyplast® are also among the most comfortable collagen injections available. Though the cost of these collagen implants is less than many alternative fillers, their effects generally do not last as long (three to six months, on average). This is, however, a tradeoff many consumers are willing to make.
Zyderm®/Zyplast® Cost and Financing Information
Zyderm® and Zyplast® are relatively cheap collagen fillers and are affordable for most people. The cost of a procedure will vary from region to region and doctor to doctor, as well as by the amount of gel that is used. However, treatments usually start at about $300. There is also an additional charge for the spot test. The cost of this too will vary, but is usually around $150.
There are a number of financing options available for patients who wish to enhance their beauty using Zyderm® and Zyplast® collagen implants. Your doctor may allow you to make monthly payments. What to Expect Before, During, and After Zyderm®/Zyplast® Treatment
Before it is okay for you to receive Zyderm® and Zyplast® collagen implants, your doctor will need to perform a spot test on your forearm to assure that you are part of the 97 percent of people who don’t experience an allergic reaction to the animal-derived bovine. You will need to monitor this area very closely over the next four weeks. Once it is determined that you are a safe candidate for Zyderm® and Zyplast® injections, you can schedule an appointment with your plastic surgeon or cosmetic dermatologist.
The procedure takes only a few minutes to perform and you can resume normal activity immediately following the treatment. Some patients even get Zyderm® and Zyplast® injections on their lunch break and then return to work looking years younger. Your doctor will begin by injecting a small amount of gel into the area to be enhanced using a very fine needle. He or she will then massage the area to make sure there are no bumps and to ensure that the product is distributed evenly and smoothly. One of the most attractive features of Zyderm® and Zyplast® is that they contain a numbing agent called lidocaine to help patients feel more comfortable during the short procedure. Zyderm® and Zyplast® are the only collagen implants in their class that contain a numbing agent, making them very appealing to both doctors and patients. In addition, your doctor may also use a gentle numbing cream prior to injection, especially if Zyplast® is being used for lip augmentation.
After the Zyderm® and Zyplast® injections, you may experience tenderness, redness, slight swelling, or bruising at the injection site. These effects should subside within a day or two of the procedure, but healing time will ultimately depend on the person. Also, although allergic reactions to Zyderm® and Zyplast® are rare, they can occur, especially if the spot test wasn’t watched closely enough or performed correctly. If an allergic reaction does occur, contact your doctor immediately, and he or she will determine the best way to treat the affected area.
Risks and Benefits of Zyderm® or Zyplast® Injections
If you think you may be allergic to bovine collagen, you should not have Zyderm® or Zyplast® injections. Approximately 3 percent of people who think they are eligible for the treatment may experience an allergic reaction. A few common side effects of Zyderm® and Zyplast® injections are redness, swelling, bruising and tenderness at the injection site, but these are normal and should subside within the two days following treatment.
Some people should not undergo Zyderm® or Zyplast® injections including:
- Patients with a known hypersensitivity to lidocaine
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who have a history of autoimmune disease
- People who have a tendency to develop hypertrophic scars (raised, red scars that appear at the sit of a healed skin injury)
Zyderm® and Zyplast® brand collagen implants are the oldest cosmetic fillers on the market and were the first to be approved by the FDA. They have a long history of success and are trusted by numerous doctors and patients. Zyderm® and Zyplast® produce stunning results and have a high rate of repeat patients. On the other hand, they last about half as long as other comparable treatments, with an average lifespan of three to six months.
