Artificial Insemination

Artificial insemination achieved widespread popularity as an infertility treatment in the 1970s. Intracervical insemination (ICI), the original technique used for artificial insemination (AI), is fairly uncomplicated in nature. The most common AI technique used today, intrauterine insemination (IUI), offers certain advantages over ICI. Below you will find information on artificial insemination, including the benefits and cost of artificial insemination and an explanation of the different artificial insemination procedures performed.

What is Artificial Insemination?

Artificial insemination, or AI, is a fertilization procedure in which sperm is artificially placed into a woman’s cervix (intracervical insemination) or uterus (intrauterine insemination). During artificial insemination treatment, the woman’s menstrual cycle is closely monitored using ovarian kits, ultrasounds, and blood tests. The semen to be implanted is “washed” in a laboratory, which increases the chances of fertilization while removing unnecessary, potentially harmful chemicals. The semen is inserted into the woman, and if the procedure is successful, she conceives.

Success rates for artificial insemination vary based on the type of fertility problem being treated and the age of the patient. Most women who choose artificial insemination have a 5 to 25 percent chance of becoming pregnant with each menstrual cycle. These chances increase if you take fertility drugs in conjunction with the procedure.

Artificial Insemination Procedures

Artificial insemination procedures are advanced forms of fertility treatment that involve the use of a thin, flexible tube to precisely place donor sperm into a woman's reproductive tract. Before the procedure, the sperm to be used is washed and concentrated to increase the likelihood of a conception. Below is a brief overview of the two main types of artificial insemination, intrauterine insemination (IUI) and intracervical insemination (ICI), both of which can be performed by a reproductive specialist at your local fertility clinic. Please use the links provided for a more comprehensive examination of artificial insemination procedures or to learn about in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Intracervical Insemination (ICI)

Intracervical insemination, or ICI, is one of the most commonly performed types of artificial insemination. ICI is a relatively quick and usually painless procedure that deposits donor sperm directly into the cervix, dramatically increasing the chances that the sperm will make its way through the uterus and fallopian tubes, where it can fertilize the egg. Typically less costly than intrauterine insemination (see below), the ICI procedure produces high success rates. To help you learn more about this method of artificial insemination, DocShop has provided additional information on intracervical insemination.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination, or IUI, is the most commonly performed method of artificial insemination by husband (AIH). Often simpler and less expensive than in vitro fertilization (IVF), intrauterine insemination is an effective treatment for some forms of infertility. When combined with ovarian stimulation, IUI – which places sperm in the fallopian tubes – produces high fertilization success rates. As a form of artificial insemination, IUI is good for couples with unidentifiable sources of infertility as well as for couples in which the man has some sperm deficiencies or the woman has cervical mucus problems. DocShop has provided additional information to help you learn more about intrauterine insemination.

Artificial Insemination Using Donor Sperm

Married women can choose to be inseminated with their husbands' sperm (provided the sperm is viable) or with the sperm of a donor from a sperm bank, a process called artificial insemination by donor (AID). A married woman may use a sperm donation if artificial insemination by husband (AIH) is not an option due to male factor infertility; a single woman may elect AID in order to have a baby by herself.

Artificial insemination using donor sperm may also be a solution to patients who cannot afford more advanced treatment such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) or for couples whose male partner could transfer genetic disorders to the embryo. Using a screened donor’s sperm eliminates this danger.

Benefits of Artificial Insemination

Artificial insemination is a revolutionary fertility procedure with numerous benefits. The AI technique creates an avenue to pregnancy for couples faced with male infertility or female infertility. Further, AI by donor allows sperm to be tested and screened prior to insemination, reducing the likelihood of passing a genetic disorder on to the child. Another benefit of artificial insemination is that it allows same-sex couples to conceive a child. A fertility specialist in your area will be able to provide you with additional information on the benefits of artificial insemination.

Cost of Artificial Insemination

Artificial insemination procedures tend to be costly due in part to the expertise required to perform them. In addition, most clinics that offer AI are self-funding and operate on a commercial basis. Generally, the cost of artificial insemination includes:

  • The cost of investigation and diagnosis
  • The cost of drug therapy
  • The cost of the AI procedure (the intracervical insemination procedure is typically less expensive than the intrauterine artificial insemination procedure)
  • The cost of the hospital stay

Other charges may apply; be sure to talk with your fertility specialist about the total cost of artificial insemination. Also ask your physician about any infertility treatment financing options that may be available. Financing can make the cost of your treatment affordable.

some people are ignorant. I am in a lesbian relationship and my spouse and I are going to have children. Do you really think we care about how you feel about us having a child, NO. No one can judge us but God and to be honest we are both very successful women and I'm sure our kids are going to be raised just as well if not better than if they were in a heterosexual household. So ladies just do your research and decide what procedure will best fit you and your spouse.

Adopt!! Lots of unwanted kids that want a place to call home. Enough humans in this world. Empty the foster cares and orphanages before making more kids. Have a heart for those who are homeless and need love. We are all the human family.

I, myself, believe that if anyone wants to conceive and doesn't have the proper tools to do so, they should be more than welcomed and informed. You say that people are 'uninformed and ignorant' but isn't that what this website is for? To get information on a life-changing decision? I have dealt with losing my aunt to cervical cancer a year ago and I myself would like to have the opportunity to have a child, but with the genetic bad luck I bare, that may not be an option. My husband and I have been trying for 2 years and still no dice. We cannot afford to go see a fertility specialist. I have already set up a nursery in hopes that we may get lucky one day. It's a heart break here and a bad day there. So, bringing a light comment to the judgmental, cruel situation on what is supposed to be an informative and exciting website, BACK OFF. OR MOVE TO A COUNTRY WHERE THEY DO IN FACT PREVENT WOMEN FROM HAVING CHILDREN. BECAUSE NOT ONE PERSON ON THIS WEBSITE, MADE FOR HAVING CHILDREN, WANTS TO HEAR YOUR GOD AWFUL MOUTH SPOUTING OFF IDEAS THAT NOT EVEN A CHILD WOULD FIND INTERESTING OR EDUCATED.

I am 25 years old. I have a son,but I was wanting to have another baby, but I had 3 pregnancies in the tubes so they took my left tube out. The doctors had said that I had a 0% chance to have anymore kids unless I go thru a infertility doctor to have it put inside that would be the only way I can other child. I don't have my tubes tide or nothing. My right tube is a little bit damaged, but I am wanting to know if there would be any risk that anything could go bad thru the process or anything. Also, I would need to know exactly how much it would cost to go thru the infertility process. Please respond back ASAP.

How can u not judge ? have a look at the questions.. im not going to comment on those in particular but reading these i couldn't help but shake my head.. i only two weeks ago had another surgery now counting at four.I've had my right tube removed because i had an eptopic and two weeks ago had to go threw another eptopic pregnancy. doctors tried hard to make sure i didn't loose all chance placing me on chemotherapy injections and only a few days later being rushed into theatre because my left tube ruptured.. so yes some of us may sit and judge but honestly if yuan go threw the heart ache and suffering mentally and physically and to stumble across people who have no inclining about the seriousness this is to others and leave some foolish and immature stuff laying around ofcourse they will be frowned upon!! this is a serious matter to some people .. not a joke! and neither is the outcome !

To answer most of your comments/questions, I would just like to say, I think most of you are crazy, stupid, uninformed, and ignorant. Pick up a book and read. For those of you who are under the age of 25 you should not even think about having any kids but living life to the fullest, and @ the virgin that wants a child but does not want to have sex you are just f------ CRAZY... You all need to grow up and realize that life does not revolve around foolishness and kids are not toys or left overs that are meant to tide you over.

For the women married or with other women, they would always have to go through some other means of having children by other people instead of together because that's not the way how God designed reproduction to take place in the first place. so to Brittney's question, a woman could NEVER have children with another woman. A man MUST and ALWAYS would have to play a vital role in baby making.

For the women with other wemen, You can do IVF take your partners egg and put it in you and use a donor sperm. AI can be done when you are 18 but you have to go to a rigourous run through with doctors and social workers.
