Featured ToolsIn Vitro Fertilization Risks and Benefits
Though there are many benefits of IVF treatment, the procedure is not without certain risks. Below are general risks and benefits to consider when contemplating whether or not to undergo IVF treatment.
Risks
There are certain risks associated with in vitro fertilization, as there are with any surgical procedure. Due to the technology and medical expertise necessary for IVF, cycles of treatment can be expensive, and the initial cycle does not always work. In addition, the use of multiple embryos during embryo transfer has been known to cause multiple births. Some studies suggest a slightly increased risk of genetic disorders among children conceived through in vitro fertilization, although other studies dispute these findings.
Benefits
One of the most obvious benefits of in vitro fertilization
is that it can enable an infertile couple to have a baby. IVF treatment can
also reduce the need for surgery on the fallopian tubes.
In a recent study, nearly 1,000 European children who were
conceived through in vitro fertilization and monitored from birth until age 5
were shown to be as healthy as children who were conceived naturally.
