About the Practice

Over 50% of the people in the U.S. don't go to a dentist on a regular basis. And the major reason is because they are absolutely frightened. We have heard it all, but the fact is you will eventually need a dentist someday. The longer you wait, the worse the condition gets and the more expensive it will be to fix what ails you.
The Smile Center is proud to offer "Dentistry While Asleep." That is, anesthesia administered by a medical board certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Jeff Sklar. Dr. Harry Harcsztark and his partner, Dr. Richard Ekstein, a Prosthodontist, N.J. Spec. Permit #3863, perform all work at their Kearny, NJ office. The Smile Center has a special suite fully equipped and State Board inspected and certified to comply with all the requirements necessary to perform dentistry under anesthesia. So while you snooze, your dental work is performed, completed and painless.

Most phases of dentistry including cosmetic makeovers and reconstruction, crowns and bridges, root canals, periodontics (gum treatment), cleanings and fillings can be performed while asleep. Dr. Mendel Markowitz, Oral Surgeon, N.J. Spec. Permit #3778, is also on staff at The Smile Center and takes care of all the oral surgery including wisdom teeth under IV Sedation whenever requested.

So, if you fall into this category of the deathly fearful or are a busy business or corporate executive where time is often a major concern, having all your dentistry completed in one location and in one or two long sessions may be the answer. There is salvation!

Practice Dentists

Harry J. Harcsztark, D.D.S.
F.A.G.D., F.I.C.O.I.

Dr. Harcsztark, or "Dr. H." as he is affectionately known to his patients, has been practicing caring quality general and cosmetic dentistry, including full mouth reconstruction, in Kearny since 1977.

Upon graduation from New York University College of Dentistry in 1974 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.), he entered the United States Navy as a dentist. From 1975 to 1976, he was assigned to work on a 5-year backlog list of patients who needed prosthetic work (crowns, bridges and dentures). The Navy provided "Dr. H." with his own dedicated dental lab and 2 technicians, all necessary training at Bethesda Naval Hospital, and unlimited support, which resulted in completing the assigned task in one year with numerous commendations for a "job well done."

Dr. Harcsztark has worked with Dr. Leonard Linkow in New York City from 1978-1981 learning and practicing implant dentistry. Dr. Linkow is world renowned, professionally known as the "Father of Dental Implants" and an honorary chair in his name at NYU College of Dentistry, Department of Implant Dentistry.

In 1990-1991, Dr. H. completed a one year, 300-hour maxi-course in implantology at Brookdale Hospital and Medical Center, now affiliated with NYU.

Dr. Harcsztark opened his Kearny, New Jersey dental practice in 1977 and Upper Montclair office in 1995. Building upon his extensive training in cosmetic crown and bridge prosthetics, Dr. H. successfully built one of the premier practices in cosmetic makeovers and dental reconstruction in the Northern New Jersey area.


Richard Ekstein, D.M.D.
Prosthodontist, N.J. Spec. Permit #3863

Dr. Ekstein graduated in 1985, where he received his D.M.D. degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, NJ. He spent two years in private practice in New Jersey. In 1987, Dr. Ekstein returned from graduate training in Prosthodontics at Fairleigh Dickinson University Dental School in Hackensack where he received his specialty degree in Prosthodontics, specializing in complex dental and cosmetic reconstruction utilizing crowns (caps), bridges, dentures, partials, and implant prosthetics.

Upon receiving his degree in 1989, Dr. Ekstein worked as an associate in a dental practice in Whitestone, New York for 3 years before joining our practice, The Smile Center, in 1991. His specialty expertise will significantly enhance our ability to treat complex cosmetic dental reconstruction cases successfully. Dr. Ekstein's gentle and sincerely caring nature has helped make our practice so loveable.

Jeffrey Sklar, M.D.
Anesthesiologist, Board Certified and Diplomate
American Board of Anesthesiology

Dr. Sklar graduated medical school in 1985. He continued on with his medical training where he received his specialty certification in Anesthesiology and is board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He is also a Diplomat of The Board, the highest status a Medical Anesthesiolost can attain. He is currently an attending Anesthesiologist at Wayne General Hospital in Wayne, NJ and is also on staff at The Smile Center as a medical anesthesiologist where he places patients under deep sedation and monitors them continuously while their dental work is being performed.
Better it doesn't get. Dr. Sklar is by far the calmest, most relaxing and confident anesthesiologist you could ever ask for. The Smile Center has treated numerous dental cases while "asleep" since 1992 safely and successfully. Dr. Sklar has been with our practice since 1994 and are grateful to have such a highly qualified and very personable professional as part of our staff.

Mendel I. Markowitz, D.D.S.
Oral Surgeon, N.J. Spec. Permit #3778

Dr. Markowitz graduated from Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery in 1986. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Dr. Markowitz offers IV Sedation for our fearful patients. His char-side manner is of a gentle and caring nature. He makes all patients feel comfortable and at ease. We are truly fortunate to have such a fine gentleman and professional as part of our staff.
