Refractive Surgery Technology Showcase

Advances in LASIK and other refractive surgery technology lead to safer and more effective vision correction treatment than ever before.

Staar Visian ICL™

Staar's Visian ICL™ is an implantable collamer lens used to treat moderate to severe myopia (nearsightedness). An excellent alternative to LASIK, the Visian ICL™ is a good option for patients who do not qualify for the LASIK procedure due to thin corneas. Unlike LASIK, which requires the removal of corneal tissue, the Visian ICL™ does not degrade the cornea. During placement of the Visian lens, small incisions are created through which the lens is inserted. The incisions heal on their own in the days following the procedure. The Visian ICL™ is a superior treatment option for patients seeking correction of their nearsighted vision. Read more about the Visian ICL™.

Advanced CustomVue™

The Advanced CustomVue™ procedure brought to you by AMO® utilizes VISX® technology to allow your doctor to measure and correct the unique imperfections in your vision. As shown in FDA clinical studies for treatment of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, the CustomVue™ procedure can produce better vision than is possible with glasses or contact lenses.

You may have heard CustomVue™ treatments referred to as “custom LASIK” or “wavefront LASIK.” CustomVue™ treatments use WaveScan™ technology, originally developed to reduce distortions in high-powered telescopes, to:

  • Measure imperfections in your eye 25 times more precisely than standard methods.
  • Produce a detailed map of your eye as unique as your fingerprint.
  • Generate digital information which is transferred directly to the laser used in your procedure, to provide a new level of precision and accuracy.

In addition, the CustomVue™ procedure uses Iris Registration Technology, the first fully automated method of aligning and registering wavefront corrections for CustomVue™ treatments. This non-contact method of aligning the treatment to the cornea provides greater alignment accuracy.Learn more about the VISX® CustomVue™ system.

Intralase® Method

IntraLase® is a 100 percent blade-free technique used to create the corneal flap during the LASIK procedure. Using tiny, rapid pulses of laser light (instead of a metal blade) the IntraLase® Method creates microscopic bubbles just beneath the surface of the cornea. The flap is then created as the doctor gently separates the tissue where the bubbles have been strategically created. The revolutionary way in which the IntraLase® Method creates these bubbles creates a smooth, even surface. A traditional microkeratome is only capable of making a one-dimensional cut across the cornea and often creates an irregular surface once the flap is lifted.

The IntraLase® Method offers several benefits over other corneal flap creating techniques:

  • Improved vision. Clinical trials indicate that more patients achieved 20/20 vision when their LASIK procedure was performed using IntraLase®. Also, in a clinical study in which patients received LASIK using the IntraLase® Method in one eye and microkeratome in the other, increased improvement of vision in the IntraLase® eye was found at a three-to-one ratio.
  • The IntraLase® Method gives your doctor the ability to “tailor” the dimensions of the corneal flap on a case-by-case basis. Everyone’s eyes are unique. IntraLase® allows the doctor the ability to determine everything from the diameter of your flap to the angle of its edges. Individualized care contributes to excellent postoperative outcomes.

The IntraLase® Method takes only about 15-30 seconds per eye. Your entire LASIK procedure – including preparation – can be completed in just 10 minutes. Read more about the IntraLase® Method.

Crystalens®

Manufactured by eyeonics™, inc., the crystalens® intraocular lens is a revolutionary accommodative lens used to treat patients with cataracts and presbyopia. As people age, the muscles of their eyes begin to lose their focusing ability, and eventually cataracts form. These conditions cause blurred, clouded vision, and lead to complete dependency on glasses or contact lenses. Replacement of the eye's lens with crystalens® restores impaired vision. The unique design of the crystalens® intraocular lens accommodates vision at all distances for you. Because crystalens® imitates the natural focusing ability of the eye, it provides patients with the superior vision they enjoyed when they were young. More than 98 percent of patients who have had crystalens® placed can pass a driver's test and read a newspaper without glasses or contact lenses! Learn more about crystalens® to find out if it's right for you.
