Welcome to DocShop's Patient Education Page devoted to the LASIK vision correction procedure.
This refractive surgery reshapes the cornea to produce vision that is more clear and precise. LASIK is designed to treat near-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism.
After you've researched and decided on your LASIK surgeon, and preparations for the procedure have been made, another eye exam is given before the actual surgery to measure the eyes.
During the procedure, the eye is anesthetized with eye drops, and then held open with special equipment.
The LASIK surgeon will then use hand-held instruments to create the corneal flap, and use an excimer laser to reshape it and correct the refractive errors. This part involves small, rapid bursts of the laser applied to the eye, lasting about 15 seconds.
The flap is then replaced, and the eye will heal itself.
The LASIK surgery usually takes less than 15 minutes, not including pre-operative preparation.
