Welcome to DocShop's Patient Education Page devoted to LASEK, or Laser-Assisted in Situ Epithelial Keratomileusis.
Although they sound the same, LASEK has fewer risks involved than LASIK, or Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, and virtually all of the benefits. Patients who are not good candidates for LASIK because of thin corneas or large pupils may be excellent candidates for LASEK.
LASEK is considered an "off-label" use of the excimer laser, and has not yet been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Even so, many ophthalmologist consider the procedure to be the best option for some patients.
LASEK does not involve making an incision in the cornea, thus avoiding some possible complications that can arise during a LASIK procedure.
Also, LASEK has proven to have results comparable to LASIK, as well as a shorter recovery time with better results than other treatments such as PRK.
If you are concerned about risks involved with traditional LASIK or you don't meet the candidacy requirements, LASEK may be a good alternative. Find out more by contacting an eye care physician near you through DocShop-dot-com today.
