Celebrity Look-alike Sperm Donors Offered by LA Clinic
A Los Angeles-based sperm bank is taking advantage of America's obsession with celebrities by selling sperm from donors it says look like movie stars, popular athletes, and other pop culture idols.
The Donor Look-a-LikesTM program at California Cryobanks (CCB) evaluates donors according to their resemblance to celebrities and provides links to Google image searches of celebrities' names. For a fee, the client can also have a baby picture of the donor.
Sperm banks routinely provide as much information as possible about donors, short of revealing their identities. This includes physical, emotional, and intellectual characteristics. CCB decided to take the process a step further by adding to donor profiles a percentage value of resemblance to two or three celebrities.
According to CCB communications manager Scott Brown most of his company's prospective fertility clients' first question is who a donor looks like. Sperm banks are not supposed to provide adult pictures of donors, since this could compromise their privacy. They are allowed to provide baby pictures, and linking to Internet celebrity image pictures does not require permission or imply endorsement of the subjects.
Brown said there is no way to guarantee how similar a baby's looks will be to those of a celebrity, but said his company is very selective about choosing donors.
