Part 1 - Enhancing Your Beauty With Veneers
Americans today are more concerned with their health and appearance than ever before. "Baby boomers" are on the front of this war waged against aging, and spending more of their discretionary income to preserve youthfulness and maintain attractiveness longer than their parents did.
Some might believe this preoccupation with aging is superfluous until you meet that beautiful woman in her 50's who is attractively groomed, dressed to the nines, with the skin of a 20 year old, and a great figure. We then realize why there are so many salons, skin care treatments, and products, and why plastic surgeons are glamorized on T.V. We live better and longer than our parents and we can see the possibilities and the value of taking good care of ourselves.
Now imagine this same fabulous-looking woman then smiles to reveal aged and yellowed teeth, with unsightly mercury fillings on her side teeth, and the traditional darkness at the gumline from metal-based crowns. These dental flaws demonstrate every bit of her 50-plus years of wear and tear in her teeth! We don't always realize it because it happens so gradually, but these teeth, in our mouths since second grade, will not look as white, young, and fresh by the time we reach the age of 50. Most dentists trained to fix broken molars do not recommend cosmetic improvement of the teeth, as one would do for hair, skin, clothing, or even our automobiles.
Only recently have many patients realized that one's smile is a significant part of our appearance. Why we as a society did not previously realize how important our smiles are to overall health and appearance is because our knowledge of all things toothy came from dentists, who are still generally unconcerned with appearance, and 85 percent of dentists still place metal-based fillings on teeth. Dentists have typically been concerned with restorative work; many dentists did not offer us any way to make our teeth look better until Crest marketed tooth whitening to the public. Now, there are a few cosmetic dentistry experts who offer treatments to improve the appearance of the teeth and gums, and are trained and skilled to create beautiful smiles that are strong and healthy.
