  • Date of Birth: November 4, 1960
  • Rumored Procedures: liposuction, rhinoplasty, brow lift, chemical peel, dental veneers, BOTOX® Cosmetic

Kathy Griffin isn't afraid to speak her mind. In fact, the crass comedian has spent much of her career in the headlines not necessarily for her role in television or movies, but for her outrageous comments on everything from other celebrities to her promiscuous dating life. Her most recent work, starring in Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List chronicles her self-admitted embarrassing life in Hollywood where she often goes unrecognized or mistaken for Kathy Lee Gifford. But of all the shocking statements that Griffin has made throughout her career, the most memorable comments are those regarding the plastic surgery she received. The actress has frequently opened up about her body image and her years-long struggle to feel comfortable in her own skin. Her memoir, Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin, details all of the work she has had done, and how it has affected her.

At age 26, Griffin underwent rhinoplasty surgery in an effort to boost her career. In her memoir, she points out that a remarkable amount of people suggested she decrease the size of her nose in order to land more television jobs and succeed in the business. Griffin was ultimately unhappy with the results because she felt that there was no significant change in the size of her nose. In 2008 she joked that her original nose "grew back."

Griffin is known for being especially candid about her liposuction experience in 1999. After receiving liposuction on her stomach, thighs, and the inside of her knees Griffin developed serious health complications. In her memoir, she shares post-surgery photos which she describes as looking like "a CSI crime-scene photo." Griffin admitted that she didn't choose a surgeon who was well qualified, which most likely resulted in her complications. Unfortunately, the liposuction that she received was unsuccessful and did more harm to her body than good. Later in 2003, Griffin underwent more liposuction in her stomach and arms. Having chosen a skilled surgeon, she was ultimately pleased with the results.

Brow Lift

Despite her less-than-ideal experience with plastic surgery, Griffin decided to undergo more procedures in 2003. She received a brow lift in order to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on her forehead, and lift her sagging brow for a younger look. Now, the comedian's eyes are more open, helping her appear more alert.

Chemical Peel

On the same day as her brow lift, Griffin also received a chemical peel. This is a procedure which uses a chemical to improve the texture and look of the skin. Griffin described the side effects as being uncomfortable, but has said that she is very pleased with the results. The chemical peel drastically reduced the appearance of wrinkles near her eyes, making her appear years younger.

Dental Veneers

In addition to traditional plastic surgery, Griffin has also undergone cosmetic dentistry procedures including receiving veneers. Griffin had admitted to being embarrassed at the discoloration of her teeth and wanting "soap-opera" teeth. Today, she has a bright, natural-looking smile.

Botox® Cosmetic

In addition to more invasive surgical procedures, Griffin has admitted to receiving BOTOX® injections. She has said that she feels it is important for her to constantly improve her look, considering her line of work. A quick look at before and after photos reveals a smoother face, with much fewer wrinkles than in earlier years.

Realistic Expectations

Throughout her career Griffin has admitted that she received plastic surgery in an effort to look like Jennifer Aniston. In addition, much of her motivation for plastic surgery came from a desire to keep up with other actresses in Hollywood. Receiving cosmetic surgery in order to look like someone else or create an unrealistic image is ill-advised by cosmetic surgeons. When considering plastic surgery, it is important to have realistic expectations regarding the outcome. In addition, it is important to choose a professional cosmetic surgeon who can produce natural-looking results in a safe manner. While cosmetic procedures pose health risks (as with any other surgery), choosing a skilled professional can help you avoid painful situations like those described by Griffin.
