Blepharoplasty

Droopy eyelids and bags under the eyes are not only frustrating signs of age, but they can also interfere with your line of sight.

Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery removes sagging skin above or below the eye to improve peripheral vision and rejuvenate your appearance.

Why should I consider blepharoplasty?

More Confidence in Your Appearance

The eyes play an important role in communication and social interaction. By eliminating signs of aging, blepharoplasty can have a substantial impact on your self-confidence, appearance, and the way others view you.

Improved Peripheral Vision

If the upper eyelid droops severely, it can reduce your ability to see. By removing the obstruction, eyelid surgery can improve your vision.

Versatility

In many cases, your surgeon can combine eyelid surgery with other cosmetic procedures, such as rhinoplasty or a facelift for an even more dramatic enhancement.

While it is not for everyone, patients should keep in mind that the procedure is fairly straightforward and boasts a high rate of success. In 2016, more than 209,000 surgeries were successfully performed. The procedure targets the tissue around the eye, not the eye itself. While there are risks, eyelid surgery is no riskier than other surgical procedures.

Okay, you've got my attention. What can I expect during treatment?

A Brief Procedure

This outpatient procedure involves several simple steps:

injection-personCreated with Sketch.

Anesthesia: To ensure your comfort, the doctor will administer local anesthetic around the eyelids. You may also receive intravenous (IV) sedation or general anesthesia.

incision-3Created with Sketch.

Incisions: If targeting the upper lid, the doctor will make an incision in the fold of the eyelid. To address the lower lid, the doctor will place the incision just below the lashes for the most discretion.

Tissue repositioning or removal: Through the incision, the surgeon can reposition the skin, muscle, or fat causing the lid to droop. They can also remove excess tissue and tighten the underlying muscles.

Once the incision is closed, it typically takes a few weeks for any swelling to dissipate. Keep in mind that it may take several months for the scars to fully fade.

Is surgery really my only option?

Nonsurgical Solutions

If you are hesitant to undergo surgery, your doctor can recommend a number of nonsurgical alternatives. Injectable fillers and fat grafts can target bags beneath the lower lid. For wrinkles around the corners of the eyes, BOTOX®, chemical peels, and certain laser treatments are often helpful.

If you are ready to transform your appearance, eyelid surgery is an excellent way to address cosmetic and medical concerns. Schedule a consultation with your doctor today to find out if blepharoplasty is right for your needs.
